Sometimes we forget to breathe. We all know this feeling, juggling hundreds of jobs, tired children, running late, again, something hasn’t gone to plan. There are so many triggers leading us into a place of stress and anxiety.
According to Beyond Blue, “45% of Australians will have a mental health condition during their lifetime. In any one year, 1 million Australians suffer from depression and 2 million have anxiety.” This affects everyone in the family. Suicide is the leading cause of death in Australians aged between 15 and 44 and that’s a statistic we need to reverse.
As a society we’re becoming more and more aware of the impact this is having on our family and friends. We’re looking for more ways to manage our stress and preventative strategies are definitely high on the list.
Mindfulness activities for kids
Mindfulness is the terminology we use to describe being in the moment. It’s an opportunity for us to look at what’s happening in the here and now. A time where we don’t reflect on the past or worry about the future but simply exist. Being in the present, without judgement of whether we have done good or bad. Meditation is a time that mindfulness is used. It’s a time to focus on breathing and being, allowing our minds time to have no thoughts, no worries, to simply be.
My Little Plot has developed a Grow with Gratitude Kit and the kids just love it. We encourage families to use strategies which support mindfulness at home. For many of us, our safe place is in the garden, surrounded by birds and bees, plants, the fresh air and the peace and serenity. The Grow with Gratitude Kit encourages a mindfulness routine with our children each day. Not only to grow food and to reap the rewards of fresh herbs but also providing a reason to stop, breathe and be mindful.
Growing with gratitude
The Grow with Gratitude Kit comes with:
- Compostable paper plant pots x 3
- Packets of seeds which include chives, basil and parsley x 3 of each
- Peat pellets which you plant your seeds in x 3
It’s so simple to get started that even a child can do it. Firstly, soak the peat pellets in a shallow bowl of water allowing them to expand. Then carefully place the peat into the base of one of the pots and sprinkle in some of the seeds. You gently press them into the peat, then using the supplied wooden plant label your child can write or draw what they have planted. Don’t forget to put that into the pot so you remember what you’re growing in each pot. Water your plants daily, making sure they don’t dry out or get too soggy. Once your plant starts to grow and is ready you can plant the whole thing, including the pot straight into your herb bed.
To encourage mindfulness the kit also includes:

Allow your child to choose one of the affirmation cards, it must feel right for your child. You may wish to do this routine first thing in the morning or just before bed. Using the same affirmation for about 3 or 4 weeks, ask your child to hold the crystal, close their eyes, take a deep breath in, then out, then repeat allowing love and light into their body. Say the affirmation from the card 10 times, with 10 breaths. Take another deep breath in and out and just be in the moment, allow a smile onto your face, you are ready for the day or a peaceful night’s sleep.
Allow your child to complete their journal at their leisure. It has thought-provoking questions that encourage joy, laughter, happiness, confidence and resilience.
